Black Dog Forestry case study for our Exeter Retort

Case Study

Our forestry management and firewood company is still fairly new to the world of business but we have taken it from strength to strength and one of those reasons is our purchase of the Exeter retort. During our first full year of trading, we took a step back to evaluate areas we felt there was room for improvement and any gaps in the market that we could fill.

By doing so we realised we were wasting large amounts of the offcuts of wood that would normally have been burnt or we would have used ourselves at home. We could also see that there was also a huge gap in the market for locally made and sustainable charcoal, so we decided to do a bit of research and came across The Exeter retort.

Robin, who we spoke to was more than helpful with any questions we had and amazingly was coming up our way to see another couple about 40 minutes away from us to give them a training day on how to use the retort, so we asked if we could come along to have a look. Now, I’m not going to lie, I was a little sceptical to begin with as for me it seemed expensive as an initial outlay for the business. Having said that, we spent a good few hours with a lovely group of people understanding and being shown how it all works and I came away from this experience wanting one the next day! It is the most incredible bit of kit and it has changed my whole mindset of BBQing. I was never a big fan of a BBQ, as it always tasted a bit funny to me, but I cannot explain the difference in flavour to your food, it is INCREDIBLE. We are even going to attempt to cook our Christmas dinner on it this year. We also never really understood or looked into the process of buying imported charcoal and how bad it actually is for the environment.

We strongly believe this is by far one of the coolest, most economical, sustainable and tastiest ways to get amazing quality charcoal, that you know where it’s come from and what's gone into it, like buying good quality meat from a butcher. If you are in any doubt about buying one, then don’t, you won’t regret it.
